Wireless Technologies used in our internet provision
On-Communications uses a variety of wireless technologies in different parts of its network as most appropriate for a particular application. These include:
- WiMAX
- 802.11a
- WiFi
- Licensed Microwave
How our connections and network is delivered

802.11a & WiMAX
802.11a, but now primarily WiMAX technology is used to deliver circuits between our customers and our Base Stations.
In some cases (but not all) WiMAX also provides a mobility edge network surrounding a customer installation to create an external Hot Zone (as opposed to internal Hotspots).
WiFi
On-Communications is also trialling WiFi as an edge network technology for Hot Zone applications.
Further information will be released shortly with regard to these exciting developments, and the benefits they will bring to existing and prospective customers.
Licensed Microwave
Predominantly used to backhaul traffic from Base Stations to the local Point of Presence for access to the Internet or for very large bespoke wireless projects.
Security
All elements of the On-Communications network form part of a highly secure carrier class network. Beyond that it is the Company's policy not to publicly discuss its security policies.
